LanXang Shorts
LanXang Shorts is a short film festival held annually in Vientiane Capital, Laos (at least for now). It was founded in 2020 by a group of local filmmakers to support young filmmakers and build a strong community. Working closely with the government, the festival is run by established filmmakers and volunteers. The festival consists of a short film competition and a series of film screenings, talks, and workshops.
For the competition section, we have two categories – for students and general public. The length is between 5 – 9 minutes with no specific theme. Submission is free of charge and open to Lao nationals only. Then, the submitted films will be judged by 4-5 jury members who are well-known filmmakers, and a representative from the Cinema Department. Winners will receive a cash prize, a trophy, and a certificate. Their winning films will be submitted to various festivals in the region for competitions and screenings. Film screenings will be organized both in Vientiane and the provinces. When possible, filmmakers will be invited to talk about their films with audiences as well.
A series of workshops will be carried out in provinces outside Vientiane where young filmmakers have fewer opportunities to learn basic filmmaking. We will cover various key areas of filmmaking such as scriptwriting, pre-production, filming, and editing. Workshop participants can be secondary school students and young people in general who are aspired to be filmmakers.
