DOC CICADA
Doc Cicada 2021 consists of 3 sections: education, public exchange, and networking.
For education, the highlight is our 1-month training workshop. In this highly intensive & practice-oriented workshop, students are taught basic filmmaking skills and expected to work in teams of 2 to 3 to make a short graduation film. The instructors guide them through the process and get involved majorly in the editing stage. Besides this workshop, there is a masterclass in which an international filmmaker is invited to give a lecture on a specific aspect of his/her filmmaking (ie. editing, working with strangers, found-footage).
Public exchange is carried out via screenings and a practitioners’ talk (Café talk). The screenings are curated based on region: 2 Vietnamese, 1 Southeast Asian, 2 Japanese. Tentatively, the talk topic this year is Documentary Education in Southern Vietnam, taking place in HCMC at the same time as the workshop.
Networking: The activities above also support this part, but the most important one is the Mini Industry in which decision makers and filmmakers are invited to meet and talk. The decision makers are people from cultural institutions, embassies, NGOs who may be able to support filmmakers with financing/network/access to the character. Another important activity is the Workin-Progress sessions (WIPs). The purpose is to follow up with students on their projects. Most importantly, these sessions let us meet and work together periodically and strengthen our community spirit.
